Fellow Democrats,

Kids are back in school, we’re in the last quarter of the year, and fall is quickly approaching! We’re thankful for the responsible, science-based decisions made by St. Mary’s County Public Schools, in cooperation with the St. Mary’s County Health Department, which will allow our students and educators to return to school buildings safely.

Locally, COVID-19 community spread is categorized as High by the CDC. We encourage all residents of St. Mary’s County to wear masks, wash their hands, and socially distance when possible. You can view the latest data on the Health Department’s COVID-19 Data Dashboard. One of the best things you can do to protect yourself and others from COVID-19 is get vaccinated. Find out more about local vaccination opportunities from the Health Department. It’s up to all of us, working together, to stop the spread of COVID-19.

In an exciting development, we are looking for founding members to start a St. Mary’s County chapter of Young Democrats of Maryland (YDM)! Are you interested in Democratic, liberal/progressive politics, local organizing and getting involved in the community? Then this opportunity is for YOU! Get ready to learn about and discuss local and state issues, grassroots organizing skills and work on initiatives to #changethetide in St. Mary’s County! To get involved, fill out the interest form. Do you know a young person who would want to be involved in St. Mary's County Young Democrats? Send them the interest form!

St. Mary's County Democrats mourn the loss of the 13 service members killed in the terrorist attack at Kabul airport on August 26, 2021.

Democratic Central Committee

The last meeting of the DCC was on August 18, 2021. The DCC appointed two new members, Kaitlin Fraer from Associate Member to Member, and Julia Nichols as Associate Member. We’re excited to have these members in their new roles!

Local Democrats, including members of the DCC attended events for candidates running for statewide office.

Tim Adams, candidate for Comptroller, was at Olde Town Pub in Leonardtown on August 9th. Members of the community and the Central Committee heard his plans for the Comptroller's office.

John King, candidate for Governor, held a meet and greet at Taphouse 1637 on August 25th. Local Democrats and members of the Central Committee listened as King explained his goals for the state.

In other news, the DCC is currently conducting interviews to fill vacancies for three Associate Members. These members may be appointed anytime and do not need to run for election to keep their position. All appointments will be made with gender-balancing in mind. To apply, please send a copy of your resume to [email protected]

You can view the Candidate Form, and more information about gender balancing, on our website.

I Am St. Mary’s

The next general meeting of #IAMSTMARYS, Democratic Women of St. Mary’s County will be held IN PERSON in the Pavilion at the Port of Leonardtown Winery Park on Monday, September 13th at 6:00PM for social and 6:30PM for business. This meeting was rescheduled from the August meeting date which was cancelled due to the tornado watch.

Come on out to learn about the SMC Redistricting Board, as well as volunteer opportunities for upcoming events and activities. Bring a chair with you to the meeting. Light refreshments will be available during the social hour.

...and just sayin’...that it’s time to dust off those signs you waved and join us at the St. Mary’s County Fair Parade on Saturday morning, September 23rd, to show off your signs and proudly walk in support of Democrats!

Any of our county Democratic women who may be interested in serving the county by running for elected office should contact Julie Randall at [email protected]. Additionally, there is a support system as part of the DCC to highlight special materials and financial assistance for candidates.

Thank you to the women who participated in #IAMSTMARYS Flash Bingo activity at the NAACP Back to School Fair. Also, individual members have been busy with a wide range of activities from post card writing to the NAACP Overflow Festival last weekend and the DCC Door Knocking Campaign kick off!

Thank you to all for your activism during a fraught time in our nation’s history.
